From the catwalk to furniture

The iconic houndstooth is one of the most recognisable patterns in the fashion world. It is incredibly versatile since it combines tradition with modernity – it is perfect for elegant, casual, sports, and even evening wear. Straight from the catwalks, the pattern has made its way onto furniture, further emphasising its position – this time in the world of design.

Houndstooth – a pattern with history

Although it seems that houndstooth is recognisable to anyone, many will be surprised to learn that it dates back to the 3rd century AD. It is then that the first textiles woven in the pattern of somewhat skew, dark and light chequers appeared in Scandinavia, which textiles can be considered a “prototype” of the modern houndstooth. And the pattern which resembles the modern one the most first appeared in the 17th century on Scottish blankets.
The popularity of the pattern saw a sharp rise in the 20th century. Houndstooth reigned supreme between the 1920s and the 1950s. It is worth noting that this is when it stopped being perceived solely as a textile pattern and became a symbol of luxury and true elegance (even Dior made use of this pattern on the package of its “Miss Dior” perfume).

Houndstooth furniture

Can the classic houndstooth pattern work in furniture making and interior design? Certainly – as evidenced by the Houndstooth Grey (F76069) decor from Pfleiderer.

Houndstooth is a calm and orderly pattern. It has won the favour of fans of timeless classics. This is one of the reasons Pfleiderer decided to incorporate its charm in interior design. It has proposed the Houndstooth Grey (F76069) decor, available on various carriers (laminated boards and HPL laminates), which is a successful combination of the classic textile pattern with an original mesh structure. Elegant and raw, it is perfect for furniture fronts, house fittings and public facilities.

An interior adorned with houndstooth will never go unnoticed!
